When clinical care becomes a regulatory concern
Clinical care is one of the most frequent subjects of notifications. A missed diagnosis, a delayed referral, a result that was never followed up, a prescription that should have been reviewed: any of these can lead a patient, family member, colleague or employer to raise a concern. Most of these practitioners are competent, conscientious clinicians. The problem is usually a gap in a system, a habit or a specific area of knowledge, rather than a general failure.
The National Law calls this unsatisfactory professional performance: knowledge, skill or judgement, or care exercised, that falls below the standard reasonably expected of a practitioner of an equivalent level of training or experience. Prescribing concerns often sit alongside it, especially for drugs of dependence, where state and territory law, real-time prescription monitoring and Board expectations all apply. This program addresses both, and finishes with the teamwork and handover skills that catch errors before they reach patients.
Who it is for
- Practitioners with a notification or employer concern about clinical care, diagnosis, follow-up, competence or prescribing.
- Practitioners required to undergo a performance assessment, or working under supervision, audit or prescribing conditions.
- Prescribers of Schedule 8 and other high-risk medicines, including medical practitioners, nurse practitioners, endorsed midwives, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists and pharmacists where they prescribe.
- Practitioners returning to practice, changing scope or moving into a new setting where competence drift is a risk.
- Clinical leads and supervisors who want a shared language for patient safety, escalation and learning from incidents.
Prescribers in telehealth services should also consider the telehealth course in the Practice Compliance Program.

Suggested order and what each course adds
Understand the performance standard
Unsatisfactory Professional Performance explains what the National Law means by knowledge, skill and judgement below the expected standard, how performance concerns are assessed, what a performance assessment involves and how this category differs from conduct concerns. Starting here helps you see your own situation the way a decision-maker will.
Clinical Competence and Patient Safety
Covers recognising the limits of your competence, competence drift, cognitive bias and fatigue, seeking help or declining tasks safely, keeping up to date with a reliable system, reporting incidents and near misses, systems-focused review, safety-netting, results follow-up and personal audit. You finish with a personal patient safety plan.
Prescribing Standards and Safe Medicines Practice
Explains where prescribing authority comes from for each profession, then works through TGA, scheduling and PBS rules, a structured prescribing process, medication histories, off-label use, electronic prescribing, high-risk medicines, monitoring, deprescribing, antimicrobial stewardship and honest responses to medication errors.
Safe Prescribing of Schedule 8 and High-Risk Medicines
Goes deeper on drugs of dependence: how the Poisons Standard, state and territory law, the PBS and the National Law interact, when permits and approvals are triggered, using real-time prescription monitoring well, opioid and sedative stewardship, benzodiazepines, psychostimulants, medicinal cannabis and telehealth requests, and records that show your reasoning.
Teamwork and Collaboration in Healthcare
Closes the program with the team skills that make individual practice safer: structured handover with ISBAR, delegation and referral, escalating deterioration, speaking up across a hierarchy with graded assertiveness and CUS, receiving a challenge well, and closing the loop on tasks and results.
Habits the program is designed to build
Performance concerns rarely turn on a single fact a practitioner did not know. More often they turn on habits: how results are tracked, how uncertainty is handled, how medicines are reviewed and how concerns are passed on. The program focuses on habits that hold up on a busy day.
Closing every loop
Every test you order has a named person responsible for the result, every referral has a follow-up date and every handover ends with confirmation that responsibility has been accepted.
Safety-netting that patients remember
Specific advice on what to watch for, when to return and where to go, recorded in the notes in a way another clinician could act on.
Reviewing before repeating
Every repeat prescription for a high-risk medicine is an active decision, informed by monitoring data, functional goals and a plan to taper or stop when the balance changes.
Saying when something is beyond you
Recognising competence drift, asking for help early and declining tasks outside your scope, without seeing it as weakness.

Evidence you build
Performance concerns are best answered with evidence from your own practice. The program is built to generate it:
- a personal patient safety plan and a step-by-step personal audit template;
- a pre-signing prescribing checklist and a decision checklist for every drug of dependence prescription;
- a records checklist and a practice prescribing policy template you can adapt;
- a personal teamwork plan with handover, escalation and speaking-up phrases;
- reflective accounts on competence, prescribing and teamwork, and five certificates of completion.
An audit repeated after a few months is particularly persuasive because it shows change in what you actually do. If you are remediating, the Insight, Reflection and Remediation Program shows how to turn audits and reflections into a plan. The clinical care and prescribing and medicines concern pages explain how these notifications usually progress.
Prescribing rules differ by state and territory
Permits, approvals and monitoring requirements for drugs of dependence vary across jurisdictions and change over time. The courses show you where to confirm current rules; always check your own state or territory's health department before acting.

Frequently asked questions
What is unsatisfactory professional performance?
Under the National Law it means that the knowledge, skill or judgement possessed, or care exercised, by a practitioner is below the standard reasonably expected of a practitioner of an equivalent level of training or experience. It is about performance, not character.
What happens in a performance assessment?
A Board can require a performance assessment by an assessor, which may include review of records, observation, interviews and tests of knowledge. The Unsatisfactory Professional Performance course explains the process and how to prepare, alongside advice from your adviser.
Is this program only for doctors?
No. The competence, safety and teamwork courses apply to all registered practitioners. The prescribing courses suit anyone with prescribing authority, including nurse practitioners, endorsed midwives, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists and pharmacists who prescribe.
Does it cover real-time prescription monitoring?
Yes. The Schedule 8 course explains how real-time prescription monitoring works across jurisdictions, how to interpret alerts in context and how to talk with patients about what the record shows.
Can I use the program for a prescribing condition?
If a condition requires education, the Board usually needs to approve the course first. Check the wording of your condition and nominate the course with full details before you start.
How do I show that my clinical practice has improved?
Combine learning with evidence from practice: a personal audit repeated over time, reports from a supervisor, and changes to your systems for results, safety-netting and prescribing reviews. The courses include templates for each.
Will completing the program decide the outcome of my matter?
No course can guarantee any regulatory outcome. Education helps you close gaps and show change; your insurer or lawyer can advise how to use it.
