Who this program is for

When a concern has been raised about your practice, decision-makers are rarely satisfied by a certificate alone. They want to see that you understand what happened, why it happened and what you have changed. Those three things map onto four skills: insight, reflective writing, remediation planning and preventing recurrence. This program teaches each one in turn, and each course produces a written output that feeds the next.

It suits you if:

  • a National Board has imposed conditions or accepted undertakings that require education, mentoring, a reflective report or a remediation plan;
  • your adviser has suggested that structured reflection and remediation would strengthen your response to a notification;
  • an employer, college, credentialing committee or supervisor has asked you to complete a remediation or performance plan after an incident;
  • you have made a mistake that did not lead to a notification, and you want to learn from it properly and record the learning in your CPD;
  • you supervise or mentor a practitioner who is remediating and want a shared framework to work from.

It deliberately leaves out the process courses. If you are at the start of a notification and need to understand assessment, investigation and outcomes, choose the fuller Ahpra Notification Response Program, which contains all four of these courses plus three more.

The four courses

Take them in this order. Each one ends with an assessment and a certificate of completion, and each builds on the written work from the course before.

How the four courses build on each other

  1. Insight: name the problem accurately

    Demonstrating Insight teaches six components: describing the event against the specific standard, understanding the causes, appreciating the impact on the patient, colleagues and public confidence, taking responsibility without deflecting or catastrophising, making changes linked to those causes, and sustaining them. You finish with a reflective account built on those six headings. That account becomes the raw material for everything that follows.

  2. Reflection: write it so a reader is persuaded

    Reflective Practice and Writing a Reflective Statement turns that raw material into a structured statement. You learn the four-step format in Ahpra's information sheets on reflective reports, how to move from description to analysis, which phrases signal ownership and which signal defensiveness, and how to cite evidence rather than make claims.

  3. Remediation: plan the learning that closes the gap

    Remediation for Health Practitioners shows you how to diagnose the type of gap (knowledge, skill, behaviour, systems or health), write objectives that can be evidenced, choose activities that match each gap, and work within Board restrictions, including nominating education, educators, mentors, supervisors and auditors and waiting for approval where your conditions require it.

  4. Recurrence: make the change stick

    Preventing Recurrence completes the cycle with root-cause analysis across six categories of contributing factors, the hierarchy of control effectiveness, and a written prevention plan with specific actions, review dates and measures. It also shows how to gather audit results, logs and third-party reports without overclaiming.

Weak evidence and strong evidence

What practitioners often submitWhat the program helps you produce instead
A list of courses completedCourses chosen because they match a diagnosed gap, with a reflection on what each changed
"I have reflected deeply on this matter"A dated reflective account that names the standard, the cause and the specific change
"It will never happen again"A prevention plan with controls that do not rely on memory or vigilance, and review dates
Blame on workload, the system or the patientAn honest account of contributing factors that still takes personal responsibility
A generic apologyRecognition of the actual impact on the patient and on public trust
Claims of improved practiceAn audit, supervisor report or revised process that shows the change in action

What you will have at the end

Completing all four courses leaves you with four certificates of completion and a coherent set of documents:

  • a reflective account structured around the six components of insight;
  • a reflective statement drafted to the four-step structure, plus a reusable CPD reflection template;
  • a one-page remediation plan with objectives, activities, support and timeframes;
  • a personal prevention plan with controls, owners, measures and review points;
  • quick-reference guides on insight, reflective language, nominations and evidence.

Because each document draws on the one before, they tell a consistent story. Inconsistency between a response, a reflective statement and a remediation plan quickly undermines a claim of insight, so this matters.

To organise the documents by concern and add supervisor reports, audits and other proof of change over time, use the Remediation Evidence Portfolio. For ongoing reflective CPD, the Reflective Practice Workbook and the free reflective statement template help you keep the habit going.

Working under conditions or undertakings

If a Board has imposed an education condition, read its exact wording before you start any course. Many education conditions require you to nominate a course or educator and have the nomination approved before the education counts towards compliance. A course completed before approval may not count. The Remediation course explains how nominations work and what detail the Board needs to see.

Practitioner Ethics courses are not accredited, and they are not approved by Ahpra or any National Board in advance. You can nominate a course, with full details of its content, duration and assessment, and the Board decides whether it meets the condition. Alternatively, you can use the courses as preparation and reflection alongside education the Board has already approved. Your adviser can help you decide which approach fits your situation, and no course can guarantee that a Board will accept it.

When the matter is about your health

Where a concern relates to health or impairment, remediation usually centres on treatment, monitoring and support rather than education. The courses still help with insight and planning, but your treating practitioners and the relevant practitioner health service should lead. Mandatory Notifications and Practitioner Health and Impairment covers that pathway.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this program and the Notification Response Program?

This program contains the four courses that build insight, reflection, remediation and prevention evidence. The Notification Response Program contains the same four plus courses on responding to a notification, rebuilding trust and fitness to practise. Choose this one if you already understand the process or your matter has closed.

Can I use this program to meet an education condition?

Only if the Board approves it. Most education conditions require you to nominate the course or educator first. Check the wording of your condition, nominate with full details, and wait for approval before relying on it for compliance.

How do I write a reflective report for a National Board?

Ahpra has published information sheets on reflective reports after education and after mentoring, which recommend a four-step structure. The Reflective Practice course teaches that structure in detail, with examples of stronger and weaker wording. Medical practitioners should check what the Medical Board expects.

What does demonstrating insight actually mean?

Broadly, it means showing that you understand what happened against the relevant standard, why it happened, how it affected others, that you accept responsibility, and what you have changed. The Demonstrating Insight course breaks this into six components and shows what each looks like in writing.

Will my reflections be shared with anyone?

No. Your written work stays with you. You decide, with your adviser, what to include in any submission.

Can a supervisor or mentor use the program with me?

Yes. Many supervisors find it helpful to work from the same framework. Each supervisor would need their own purchase if they want to complete the courses and receive certificates. Organisations can also ask about team licences.

Does this count towards my CPD?

The courses are reflective and practice-focused, so the learning can usually be recorded under your Board's CPD registration standard if it fits your CPD plan. Record the actual time you spend, and keep your reflections with your CPD record.
