Why conduct and boundaries belong together

Most boundary problems do not begin with a dramatic decision. They begin with small steps that each seem reasonable at the time: a personal mobile number given to a distressed patient, a gift accepted to avoid offence, a friend request left unanswered, a consultation that runs late and becomes informal. Over time those steps can add up to conduct that a Board, panel or tribunal sees very differently from the way the practitioner saw it.

The National Law describes unprofessional conduct as professional conduct of a lesser standard than the public or your professional peers might reasonably expect. Boundary breaches are among the clearest examples, and sexual misconduct sits at the most serious end, where findings of professional misconduct can follow. This program starts with that legal standard and then works through the boundary situations practitioners meet most often, in person, during examinations and online.

Who should take it

  • Practitioners who have received a notification, an employer complaint or feedback about conduct, communication or boundaries.
  • Practitioners with conditions involving chaperones, restrictions on patient groups or a requirement to complete education on boundaries.
  • Clinicians in rural, remote and close-knit communities, where dual relationships are often unavoidable and need careful management.
  • Practitioners in high-contact or intimate care, such as general practice, obstetrics and gynaecology, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, nursing, midwifery and paramedicine.
  • Psychologists and mental health clinicians, who may also want the profession-specific boundaries and multiple relationships course for psychologists.
  • Anyone who uses social media personally or for their practice.
  • Supervisors, practice managers and clinical leads who need to recognise early warning signs in their teams.

The five courses

Each course is self-paced, finishes with an assessment and issues a certificate of completion.

Suggested order and what each course adds

  1. Start with the standard: Unprofessional Conduct

    This course explains how the National Law defines unprofessional conduct, how it differs from unsatisfactory professional performance and professional misconduct, and the kinds of behaviour that lead to findings. Knowing the legal threshold gives every later course its context: you see why small lapses matter and how decision-makers weigh them.

  2. Everyday boundaries: Professional Boundaries for Clinicians

    The core boundaries course covers the power imbalance in clinical relationships and the questions every clinician faces: gifts, money and bequests, treating family and friends, dual relationships in small communities, self-disclosure, over-involvement, personal phones and messaging, invitations, unwanted attention and ending a relationship well. You leave with a green, amber and red guide and ready-made scripts.

  3. Sexual boundaries and preventing sexual misconduct

    This course covers grooming behaviours and the slippery slope, consent and observer routines for intimate and close-contact care, the rules for current and former patients and people close to them, what to do when attraction arises, and how to respond when someone discloses a concern. It also explains recent National Law reforms affecting notifiers, non-disclosure agreements and what appears on the public register.

  4. Chaperones and intimate examinations

    A practical course on explaining and consenting for intimate examinations, keeping consent active, offering and briefing a chaperone, protecting dignity, trauma-informed and culturally safe practice, telehealth and intimate images, and documentation. It also explains how chaperone and patient-contact restrictions are used today and what compliance involves day to day.

  5. Boundaries online: Professionalism on Social Media

    The final course applies everything to social media: identifying patients without meaning to, friend requests and direct messages, protected opinion versus conduct of concern, testimonials and advertising rules in social content, account audits and practice governance, and what to do quickly when a post goes wrong.

Evidence you build

Across the five courses you produce written work you can keep in your CPD record and, if relevant, discuss with your adviser:

  • reflective accounts based on boundary-specific prompts, including one based on an audit of your own social media;
  • a boundary self-audit you can repeat every six to twelve months to show sustained practice;
  • a personal prevention plan for sexual boundaries that you can review with a supervisor or mentor;
  • a before, during and after checklist for intimate examinations, with model phrases for offering a chaperone;
  • a pre-posting checklist and a template for practice social media governance;
  • five certificates of completion recording approximate learning time.

If boundaries are the subject of a notification, combine this program with the reflective courses in the Insight, Reflection and Remediation Program so that your topic learning is matched by insight and a written plan. The professional boundaries and sexual boundaries concern pages explain how these notifications are usually handled.

If the concern involves sexual misconduct

These are among the most serious matters a practitioner can face, and immediate action is possible. Contact your indemnity insurer, medical defence organisation or lawyer before you respond, and do not contact the person who raised the concern. Education is part of a response, never a substitute for advice.

Questions about boundaries training

Is this program suitable if I have a chaperone condition?

It is designed to help. The Chaperones and Intimate Examinations course explains how chaperone and patient-contact restrictions work and what compliance involves. If your condition also requires education, check whether the Board must approve the course first, and nominate it before you start.

Can I accept a gift from a patient?

Small, token gifts are usually acceptable if they do not affect your care and you would be comfortable for colleagues to know about them. Larger gifts, money, bequests and repeated gifts raise real concerns. The Professional Boundaries course gives clear tests and wording to decline gracefully.

Can I ever have a relationship with a former patient?

It depends on your profession's code, the nature and length of the clinical relationship, the time since it ended and the patient's vulnerability. For some professions and situations, such as psychological care, a relationship may never be appropriate. The Sexual Boundaries course sets out the factors decision-makers consider.

Do I need a chaperone for every intimate examination?

Codes and guidelines expect you to offer one, explain the examination and obtain consent. Whether a chaperone is mandatory depends on your setting, local policy and any Board restriction. The Chaperones course explains when to offer, how to brief a chaperone and what to do when one is declined or unavailable.

Is it a boundary breach to accept a friend request from a patient?

Accepting a request is not automatically a breach, but it blurs the professional relationship and risks privacy and dual roles. Most practitioners keep personal accounts separate. The Social Media course gives practical options and scripts.

I work in a small town. How do I avoid dual relationships?

Often you cannot avoid them entirely. What matters is recognising them, keeping clinical decisions separate from personal ties, documenting your reasoning and referring when the overlap compromises care. The Professional Boundaries course covers rural and close-community practice in detail.

Will completing this program resolve a boundaries notification?

No course can guarantee any outcome. Education helps you understand the standard and show change, and your adviser can tell you how it fits your response.
