The problem the portfolio solves

Most practitioners complete plenty of learning. The difficulty is usually the record. Certificates sit in email inboxes, conference attendance is half-remembered, reflections are written in a rush at renewal time, and the learning plan is reconstructed after the fact. When Ahpra audits a random selection of practitioners, or when a concern prompts questions about your professional development, a record built that way is hard to rely on.

CPD registration standards differ between Boards, but the shape of what is expected is similar: plan your CPD against your scope of practice and learning needs, complete activities that are relevant, reflect on how they affect your practice, and keep records that show all of this. The CPD Portfolio is built around that shape.

Courses that strengthen your CPD record

Courses on reflection and the shared standards are a natural starting point for a well-planned CPD year.

What is inside

Everything is organised by CPD year, with your Board's terminology where the standard uses specific categories.

  • CPD plan

Set learning goals for the year linked to your scope of practice, feedback you have received, incidents, audits or new responsibilities.

  • Activity log

Record each activity with date, provider, description, actual time spent and the type of activity your Board recognises.

  • Hours by type

Running totals by activity type, such as educational, reviewing performance and measuring outcomes for doctors, or interactive and peer consultation hours where your Board requires them.

  • Reflections

A short reflection for each activity, using a quick what, so what, now what format or a fuller structure for significant learning.

  • Certificates and evidence

Upload certificates, attendance records, audit results and other evidence, attached to the activity they relate to. Practitioner Ethics course certificates can be added directly.

  • Evidence pack export

Download your plan, log, totals, reflections and attachments as an organised pack for an audit, a CPD home or your own files.

Built around your Board's standard, not ours

You choose your profession and set your annual target from your Board's current CPD registration standard. For example, the Medical Board's standard requires at least 50 hours a year with minimum amounts in educational activities and in reviewing performance and measuring outcomes, and membership of a CPD home. The Nursing and Midwifery Board's standard requires at least 20 hours a year for most registrants, with more for some endorsements. The Dental Board's standard works over a three-year cycle. The Psychology Board's standard includes peer consultation hours. The portfolio lets you track the categories that matter for you.

Boards review their standards from time to time, and Ahpra and the National Boards consulted in 2026 on revised CPD and recency of practice standards. Always check your Board's website for the current requirement and update your target if it changes. Our free CPD hours planner summarises each Board's core requirement as a starting point.

A simple routine for the year

  1. Start of the year: set goals

Spend twenty minutes writing three to five learning goals. Draw on feedback, complaints, incidents, audit results, changes in your role and your Board's priorities.

  2. As you go: log within a week

Add each activity soon after you complete it, with the actual time spent and a two or three sentence reflection while it is fresh.

  3. Quarterly: check your totals

Look at hours by type against your target. If one category is lagging, such as interactive hours, plan an activity to fill it.

  4. End of year: review and export

Write a short review of what changed in your practice, carry unfinished goals into next year's plan and export your evidence pack.

What you get for A$59

  • 12 months of access to the CPD Portfolio in your student portal.
  • Activity entries, reflections and attachments organised by CPD year.
  • Automatic entries for Practitioner Ethics courses you complete, with the certificate attached; you add the actual time you spent.
  • Evidence pack export at any time, so you keep your records after your access ends.

The portfolio is a record-keeping tool. It does not submit anything to Ahpra, a Board or a CPD home, and it does not decide whether an activity meets your Board's standard. Those judgements remain yours.

Writing reflections that are worth keeping

The reflection field is where most CPD records are weakest. A useful CPD reflection does not need to be long. Three questions are enough for most activities: what did I learn or notice, why does it matter for my patients and my practice, and what will I do differently as a result? Two or three honest sentences answering those questions are worth more than a page of summary.

For example, after a course on records, a weak entry says the course was informative. A useful entry says that you realised you rarely record the alternatives you discussed with patients, that this matters because your notes would not show the patient's choice, and that you have added a prompt to your template and will check ten records next month. That entry links learning to a specific change and a way of checking it, which is what Boards mean when they ask how CPD affects your practice.

If you want more structure, the Reflective Practice Workbook offers guided models, and the portfolio links each workbook reflection to the activity it relates to.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a CPD home?

No. Doctors must belong to a CPD home under the Medical Board's standard, and should log activities there as it requires. The portfolio helps you organise your own records and evidence alongside it.

Will the portfolio tell me if I am compliant?

It shows your totals against the target you set from your Board's standard. Whether a specific activity qualifies, and whether your record as a whole meets the standard, is your judgement under your Board's requirements.

Can I log activities from other providers?

Yes. Log any CPD activity, from conferences and journal reading to peer review and audits, and attach whatever evidence you have.

How long should I keep CPD records?

Boards set their own record-keeping expectations, and some specify a period. Check your Board's standard. Exporting your evidence pack each year is an easy way to keep a permanent copy.

What happens when my 12 months ends?

Export your evidence pack before access ends. You can renew to continue using the portfolio for the next CPD year.

Can my employer see my portfolio?

No. Your portfolio is private to your account. You choose what to export and who to share it with.

Does the portfolio count the hours for me?

It adds up the actual time you record for each activity. Course estimates are not entered automatically as hours; you enter the time you really spent.
