Who this program is for

A notification is one of the most stressful events in a clinical career. Most practitioners have never read the National Law, do not know who will decide their matter, and are unsure what to write, what to avoid and how long it will take. This program puts seven courses in a deliberate order so that you understand the process first, then build the reflective and remediation work that decision-makers look for, and finally plan how to rebuild trust once the matter is decided.

It is designed for:

  • registered health practitioners in any regulated profession who have received a notification, a request for a response, or a notice of proposed immediate action;
  • practitioners who have been told by their indemnity insurer, medical defence organisation or lawyer that relevant education and reflection may help them show insight;
  • practitioners with conditions or undertakings that require education, reflection or a remediation plan;
  • practitioners whose matter has closed and who want to make sure nothing similar happens again;
  • supervisors, mentors and practice managers who support a colleague through the process.

If your concern is mainly about one subject, such as boundaries, records or prescribing, you may also want a topic course or program alongside this one. The concerns hub explains each notification category and which courses map to it.

Get advice before you respond

This program is education, not legal advice. If you have received a notification, contact your professional indemnity insurer, medical defence organisation or lawyer before you send anything to Ahpra or a National Board. No course can guarantee any regulatory outcome, and Practitioner Ethics is independent of Ahpra and every National Board.

The seven courses in this program

Each course is self-paced, ends with an assessment and issues its own certificate of completion. The order below is the one we recommend.

Suggested order and what each course adds

  1. Understand the process before you write anything

    Responding to an Ahpra Notification or Investigation maps the whole pathway: who decides in your state or territory (including the co-regulatory systems in New South Wales and Queensland), assessment, investigation, health and performance assessments, immediate action, outcomes and appeals. It covers the first 48 hours, the mistakes to avoid, such as contacting the notifier or altering records, and how to structure a response that is factual and respectful.

  2. Build genuine insight

    Demonstrating Insight breaks insight into six components: recognising what happened against the standard, understanding why, appreciating the impact, accepting responsibility, making changes linked to causes and sustaining them. It also covers the common ways practitioners undermine their own insight, such as deflecting blame or over-apologising without substance.

  3. Learn to write reflectively

    Reflective Practice and Writing a Reflective Statement teaches the four-step structure that Ahpra information sheets recommend for reflective reports, based on Gibbs' cycle, along with other models. You learn to move from description to analysis and to back reflection with evidence. Doctors are shown how to check what the Medical Board expects.

  4. Plan remediation that matches the gap

    Remediation for Health Practitioners shows you how to classify a concern as knowledge, skill, behaviour, systems or health, write objectives that can be evidenced, nominate education, educators, supervisors and auditors where conditions require it, and prepare for an application to change or remove conditions under section 125 of the National Law.

  5. Prevent recurrence

    Preventing Recurrence gives you a method for root-cause analysis, controls ranked by effectiveness rather than reliance on vigilance, and a written prevention plan with owners, dates and measures. This is often the piece practitioners find hardest to show without help.

  6. Rebuild trust with each audience

    Rebuilding Trust After a Notification covers what the public register shows after different outcomes, how to comply with conditions in a way that builds the Board's confidence, how to disclose to employers, insurers and credentialing bodies, what to say when a patient asks, and when you can seek review of restrictions or removal of a reprimand.

  7. Protect your registration for the long term

    Fitness to Practise: Health, Conduct and Performance closes the program by explaining the three streams of concern, the threshold for immediate action and the full range of outcomes, then helps you identify the health, conduct and performance risk factors in your own practice and the habits that protect you.

Why the order matters

Practitioners often start with the response letter and leave reflection until later. That usually produces a defensive letter followed by a reflective statement that contradicts it. Working in this order avoids that. You learn the process and the decision-maker's perspective first, then build insight and reflection, and only then write a remediation plan and prevention plan that flow from what you have learned. The final two courses look past the decision itself to the months afterwards, when compliance, disclosure and day-to-day habits matter most.

If you are under time pressure because a response is due, complete the first course, take advice, and work through Demonstrating Insight and Reflective Practice before you finalise anything with your adviser. The remaining courses can follow over the next few weeks. Record the actual time you spend on each course against your own CPD plan, not the estimate.

Already further along?

If your matter is closed and you have conditions or a reprimand, the Insight, Reflection and Remediation Program may be a closer fit, because it focuses on the four courses that build reflective and remediation evidence without the process courses.

How to use the evidence

By the end of the program you will hold seven certificates of completion and a set of written reflections, plans and checklists. Used well, these show a decision-maker more than attendance. They show that you understand the standard, that you have looked honestly at what happened and why, and that you have made changes that will last.

  • Keep everything dated. A reflective account written after the event, with a date, is more persuasive than an undated summary.
  • Link each item to the concern. Organise your portfolio by the specific issue raised, not by course. The Remediation Evidence Portfolio is built for exactly this.
  • Show what changed in practice. A certificate shows learning; an audit, a supervisor report or a revised process shows change. The courses explain how to gather both.
  • Let your adviser decide what to submit. Your insurer, medical defence organisation or lawyer can advise what to send, when and in what form.

Every course is reflective and practice-focused, so the hours can usually be recorded under your Board's CPD registration standard, provided you plan and reflect on the learning as your standard requires. The courses are not approved by Ahpra or any National Board, and they are not accredited by them; you decide whether the learning meets your own CPD plan.

Price and savings

The program costs A$992, which is 25% less than buying the seven courses separately. The saving is applied automatically when you add the program to your cart.

If you need different courses for your situation, you can build your own bundle: any five courses attract 10% off and ten or more attract 20% off. See bulk buy for how multi-buy savings work.

Add a topic program if your notification relates to a particular area of practice.

Questions about the Notification Response Program

Will completing this program change the outcome of my notification?

No course can guarantee any regulatory outcome. Decision-makers assess the risk to the public on the facts of each matter. What education can do is help you understand the standard, reflect honestly and plan and evidence change, which are matters Ahpra and the Boards have said they consider. Take advice from your insurer or lawyer about how to use it.

Should I finish the program before I respond to Ahpra?

Not necessarily. Deadlines matter and your adviser will guide the timing. Many practitioners complete the first course straight away, then work through insight and reflection before their response is finalised, and finish the rest afterwards.

Does Ahpra approve or recognise this program?

No. Practitioner Ethics is independent, and Ahpra and the National Boards do not generally approve individual CPD courses. If you have a condition requiring education, the Board usually needs to approve the specific course or educator you nominate. Check the wording of your condition and seek approval before you start if it applies.

Does the program suit my profession?

Yes. The courses are written for all registered health practitioners in Australia and draw on examples from medicine, nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, dentistry, allied health and paramedicine. Your own code of conduct is referenced throughout. Each profession page on this site lists extra profession-specific courses you can add.

How long do I have to complete it?

Each course is self-paced and can be done in short sessions. See the site FAQ and terms for access arrangements.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes, each of the seven courses issues its own certificate of completion once you pass the assessment, recording the approximate learning time. Record the actual time you spent in your CPD log.

I already bought one of these courses. Should I still buy the program?

Contact us before you buy so you do not pay twice for the same learning. Depending on what you own, buying the remaining courses individually or through multi-buy may suit you better.

What if my concern is about my health?

Health concerns are handled differently from conduct and performance concerns, and the focus is on safe practice and support rather than discipline. The Fitness to Practise course explains the health stream, and the Mandatory Notifications and Practitioner Health course covers impairment in more depth. Doctors' and nurses' health services and other support services are listed in the courses.
