A complete foundation, not a crisis response

Most of our programs respond to a particular concern. This one is different. It is designed for practitioners who want a thorough, structured grounding in ethics and professionalism as part of their ordinary CPD, without waiting for something to go wrong. It covers the codes of conduct and how Boards use them, ethical reasoning in hard cases, communication, boundaries, honesty, documentation, open disclosure, patient safety and insight.

Together these ten topics account for much of what decision-makers examine when a concern is raised. Learning them in advance, with time to reflect and change habits, is a calmer and more effective way to protect your patients and your registration than learning them under pressure.

Who it is for

  • Practitioners who want to plan a substantial ethics and professionalism component of their annual CPD in one purchase.
  • New graduates and early-career practitioners moving from supervised training into independent practice.
  • Overseas-trained practitioners new to Australian codes, law and regulatory expectations.
  • Practitioners returning to practice after a break, or moving into private practice for the first time.
  • Supervisors, educators and clinical leads who want a shared reference for teaching professionalism.
  • Practitioners asked by an employer or college to complete broad professionalism education.

If you are responding to a notification, the Notification Response Program is usually a better starting point, because it focuses on the process, insight and remediation. You can add topic courses afterwards.

The ten courses

All ten are self-paced, end with an assessment and issue a certificate of completion. Each is about two hours.

A suggested path through the program

  1. Foundations: the codes and how to reason with them

Begin with Ethics for Health Practitioners, which explains which code of conduct applies to you, how Boards use codes as evidence, and a seven-step framework for turning ethical discomfort into a defensible decision. Professionalism for Health Practitioners follows, covering the three National Law tests for conduct and performance, accountability, registration obligations and working professionally with colleagues. Medical Ethics then applies the four principles to hard cases, from mature minors and advance care directives to voluntary assisted dying and conscientious objection.

  2. With patients: communication and boundaries

Effective Communication with Patients and Families gives you practical techniques for consultations, interpreters, families and difficult conversations. Professional Boundaries for Clinicians covers gifts, dual relationships, self-disclosure, personal messaging and the small steps that lead to boundary violations.

  3. Integrity: honesty and records

Probity and Financial Integrity covers honest claims, fees, declarations, certificates, seven-day notifications and conflicts of interest. Professionalism in Documentation and Record-Keeping shows how to write records that are accurate, timely and show your reasoning, including corrections, templates and AI scribes.

  4. When things go wrong, and how to grow

Open Disclosure in Healthcare Practice prepares you to apologise and explain after harm. Clinical Competence and Patient Safety covers the limits of competence, cognitive bias, incident reporting, safety-netting and personal audit. Demonstrating Insight closes the program with the skill that ties everything together: understanding what happened, why, and what you will change, whether after an incident or as part of routine reflection.

The question each course answers

CourseQuestion it helps you answer
Ethics for Health PractitionersHow do I reach and justify a sound decision when my code does not give a direct answer?
Professionalism for Health PractitionersWhat standard will I be measured against, and by whom?
Medical EthicsWhat do I do when autonomy, benefit, harm and fairness pull in different directions?
Effective CommunicationHow do I make sure patients understand, and feel heard?
Professional BoundariesWhere is the line between caring and over-involvement?
Probity and Financial IntegrityAre my claims, certificates and declarations ones I can stand behind?
Documentation and Record-KeepingWould my notes explain my reasoning to someone reading them years later?
Open DisclosureWhat do I say, and not say, after a patient is harmed?
Clinical Competence and Patient SafetyHow do I know when I am at the edge of my competence?
Demonstrating InsightCan I show that I understand what went wrong and have changed?

Planning the program across your CPD year

At about 20 hours, the program can make up a significant part of an annual CPD plan for many professions. CPD registration standards differ between Boards in the total hours required, the types of activity and how reflection must be recorded, so check your own Board's standard and plan accordingly. The free CPD hours planner can help you map courses against your requirements.

A practical rhythm is one course every three to five weeks, with time between courses to apply what you have learned. Each course includes a written reflective account; keep these with your CPD records, and record the actual time you spend rather than the estimate. The CPD Portfolio keeps your plan, certificates and reflections in one place.

The courses are written for all registered professions. You can add your own profession's course on ethics or professional standards, listed on each profession page, for content specific to your Board's code.

What you finish with

  • Ten certificates of completion recording approximate learning time.
  • Ten reflective accounts, each based on prompts specific to the topic.
  • A personal professionalism plan for the next 12 months.
  • Quick-reference guides including the seven-step ethical framework, professional tests and seven-day notification events, communication phrases, a boundaries guide, a record self-audit tool, open disclosure checklists and a personal patient safety plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does this program cover my whole CPD requirement?

Probably not on its own. CPD standards vary by Board and often require different types of activity, such as reviewing performance or measuring outcomes, alongside education. The program can be a substantial part of your plan; check your own Board's registration standard.

Is it suitable for every profession?

Yes. The courses draw on the shared Code of conduct used by twelve National Boards, Good medical practice, the nursing and midwifery codes and the Psychology Board's code, with examples across professions.

Some of these courses are in other programs. What if I need both?

There is overlap with the communication, boundaries, probity and clinical programs. Contact us before you buy if you need more than one program so you do not pay twice for the same course; multi-buy may be better value.

Do I have to take the courses in order?

No, but the suggested path builds logically from codes and reasoning to practice and reflection. Starting with the ethics and professionalism courses makes the later ones easier to apply.

Is the program recognised by Ahpra?

Practitioner Ethics is an independent education provider, not affiliated with Ahpra or any National Board, and the courses are not accredited. You decide whether the learning fits your CPD plan and record it under your Board's standard.

Will I receive a certificate for each course?

Yes. Each of the ten courses issues its own certificate of completion when you pass its assessment, so you can record each topic separately in your CPD log alongside your reflection.

How long does it take?

About 20 hours of learning in total. Most practitioners spread it over several months.

Is it useful if I am facing a notification?

It provides broad education, but practitioners with a current notification usually benefit more from the focused Notification Response Program, with topic courses added to match the concern. Always take advice from your insurer or lawyer first.
