About this course
Most concerns raised about pharmacists are not ethical dilemmas. They are professionalism failures: a prescription not properly checked, an error not disclosed, a Schedule 8 register that does not balance, a private conversation overheard at the counter, a service provided without the right training. Each one is preventable with clear standards, good systems and the confidence to act when conditions are unsafe.
The standards are also changing. From 1 October 2026 the Pharmacy Board's consolidated Guidelines on the safe provision of pharmacy services replace four long-standing guidelines, shifting from prescriptive rules to outcome-focused expectations on leadership and management, informed patient choice, privacy and communication, with a clearer emphasis on cultural safety. At the same time, prescribing programs, vaccination and new practice settings are expanding what pharmacists do and what they are accountable for.
This course brings it together in one practical update. It shows you what the Board expects, how to apply it at the dispensary bench, in professional services and in leadership roles, and how to meet CPD, recency and health obligations, using Australian scenarios from community, hospital and aged care practice.
Who this course is for

- Hospital, aged care, general practice and consultant pharmacists

- Pharmacists returning to practice or moving into a new area of practice

Scenarios covered
Practice situations you reason through, step by step, in the course.
The look-alike error
A patient has taken three doses of carbamazepine instead of carbimazole. You will work through clinical response, open disclosure, documentation and system review.
The Saturday locum
A pharmacist rostered alone with full dispensing and back-to-back vaccinations has two near misses by mid-morning. You will practise prioritising and escalating safely.
The online prescription surge
A pharmacy receives dozens of questionnaire-based prescriptions for the same compounded product. You will apply your responsibility for clinical appropriateness.
The UTI that is not simple
Under a state prescribing program, a patient reports fever and back pain. You will recognise when a protocol no longer applies and refer.
The overheard antidepressant
An assistant mentions a customer's new medicine to a friend. You will respond to a privacy breach and strengthen safeguards.
The promotional window sign
A pharmacy advertises health checks with customer quotes. You will test promotions against the National Law advertising rules.

Questions about this course
Is this course recognised by Ahpra or the Pharmacy Board?
No. It is not accredited, not approved and not endorsed by Ahpra or the Pharmacy Board. It is independent education built around the Board's published standards. You record the time you actually spend and decide how it fits your CPD plan.
What changes on 1 October 2026?
The Pharmacy Board's Guidelines on the safe provision of pharmacy services including medicines and advice take effect, replacing the guidelines for dispensing, practice-specific issues, proprietor pharmacists, and dose administration aids and staged supply. The Board also removed the mandated list of reference texts and published practice scenarios.
How is this different from a pharmacy ethics course?
This course is about professionalism: conduct, standards, scope, records, CPD and accountability. Ethical values, ethical reasoning and dilemmas such as conscientious objection are covered separately.
Does the course cover pharmacist prescribing?
Yes, at the level of professional standards. It explains how state and territory programs authorise prescribing and vaccination, the responsibilities that come with them and when to refer. Program details differ between jurisdictions, so you should also check the requirements where you practise.
How much CPD do pharmacists need each year?
The Pharmacy Board's CPD requirement has been expressed as 40 CPD credits in each CPD year, with at least half from higher-level activities. The Board amended its CPD guidelines in April 2026, and Ahpra and the National Boards consulted in 2026 on revised CPD and recency standards across the professions. Confirm the requirements that apply to your CPD year on the Board's website before you plan your activities.
I work in a hospital, not a community pharmacy. Is this relevant?
Yes. The code, registration standards, scope principles, error disclosure, privacy, records and CPD apply in every setting, and the course includes hospital, aged care and general practice examples. Some guideline content on proprietors and retail promotion is more relevant to community practice, but understanding it helps when patients move between settings and when you supervise interns who rotate through community pharmacies.
Is it suitable for intern pharmacists?
Yes. Interns will find the sections on dispensing accountability, supervision, scope and records particularly useful, and preceptors can use the scenarios for discussion.
Can I use this course for a condition on my registration?
Only the Board can decide that. If you have a condition or undertaking, confirm with Ahpra or the Board, and with your lawyer or insurer, before you enrol.
How long does it take and how is it assessed?
About 2 hours including reflection. You answer 15 scenario-based multiple-choice questions with a pass mark of 12 out of 15 and complete a short reflective account.
